My name is Brian, and I come from Mbale, Uganda. I am a university graduate who spent several years searching for a decent job to help me become financially independent.
When I finished my studies, I was convinced that my academic qualifications would create opportunities and help me achieve the future I had always hoped for. Sadly, reality turned out to be very different.
After graduating, I prepared my CV, organised my academic documents and began applying for employment opportunities. Whenever I came across a vacancy that suited my qualifications, I would send in my application and wait patiently for feedback.
Sometimes nobody responded, while on other occasions I received interview invitations that made me believe my breakthrough was finally approaching.
Unfortunately, most of those interviews ended without success. I would prepare carefully, dress professionally and travel to the interview location feeling confident, only to return home without an offer. Some employers told me they would get back to me, but several weeks or even months passed without hearing anything from them.
The situation became more discouraging as I watched other people move forward in their careers while I remained without employment. Some of my former classmates had found jobs, established businesses and started supporting their families. Meanwhile, I was still relying on relatives for financial assistance and struggling to afford even my basic necessities.
The most painful part was having to explain to people why I was still unemployed despite graduating from university. Whenever relatives asked whether I had secured a job, I would force a smile and explain that I was still looking. However, deep inside, I was frustrated, disappointed and increasingly concerned about what the future held for me.
I continued applying for various positions, including opportunities that had little connection to the course I had studied. I updated my CV, practised responding to interview questions and sent applications to numerous organisations. Despite putting in all that effort, rejection remained a constant experience, leaving me wondering whether I would ever get a chance to demonstrate my abilities.
There were moments when I seriously considered giving up. I had invested years in my education, hoping it would provide a pathway to a better life, but finding employment proved far more difficult than I had ever imagined. All I wanted was to earn my own income, help my family financially and finally achieve independence.
