Kenyan Senior Counsel Martha Karua has sued the Ugandan government over her deportation and declaration as persona non grata, arguing that the decision has hindered her efforts to represent jailed opposition politician Dr Kizza Besigye in his ongoing treason trial.

Karua filed the case alongside the Uganda Law Society (ULS), challenging the decision by immigration officials to deny her entry into Uganda at Entebbe International Airport on June 22, 2026.

The Attorney General has been named as a respondent.Karua argues that the decision has interfered with her professional duties and ability to participate in Besigye’s defence.

The case could also raise important questions about the rights of accused persons to choose their lawyers and the restrictions imposed on foreign legal practitioners.
