Cynthia Tumwine, daughter of the late General Elly Tumwine, has opened up about the pain of losing a parent, declaring that she cannot discuss navigating such grief with people who have never experienced the same loss.
“I’m sorry but if you’ve never lost a parent I am not having a conversation with you about navigating that grief. You will never relate so don’t try…” she wrote.
Her remarks drew attention to the deeply personal nature of grief and the difficulty of explaining the pain of losing a parent to someone who has never experienced it.
Cynthia did not name anyone or explain what prompted her statement, but her message made clear that she was setting boundaries around conversations about her personal loss.
Her father, Gen Elly Tumwine, died on August 25, 2022, at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, aged 68. President Yoweri Museveni attributed his death to lung cancer.
Gen Tumwine was a prominent military officer and politician who served as Uganda’s Army Commander and Minister of Security. He also represented the army in Parliament for three decades, until 2021.

He played a significant role in Uganda’s political and military history, with Museveni crediting him with firing the first shot during the February 6, 1981 attack on Kabamba Barracks that launched the National Resistance Army’s bush war. More than four years after his death, Cynthia’s statement highlights the enduring personal impact of losing a parent and her belief that some aspects of grief can only be fully understood by those who have experienced the same loss.
