An X account formerly used by former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has been transformed into a pan-African news platform, Global Africa Brief, raising questions about who controls the account and how the change happened.

The account, previously known as @AnitahAmong, now operates under the handle @GlobalAfricaHQ. Despite the change in name and purpose, it has retained approximately 614,000 followers, suggesting that the platform is the same account rather than a newly created profile.

Technical records cited in reports identify the account’s numerical user ID as 1325766248458809351, supporting the conclusion that the original profile was renamed. However, the available information does not establish whether Among voluntarily handed it over, authorised the rebranding or lost access to it.

The account’s previous posts have also been deleted, removing much of its publicly accessible political communication history. Its new identity is linked to globalafricabrief.com, a website covering African political, economic and social developments.

Ugandan journalist Remmy Bahati has reportedly been associated with the initiative and described herself as one of its founders. However, there is no publicly documented evidence confirming that she owns the X account or was involved in any transaction involving Among.

The development has sparked speculation on social media, with possible explanations ranging from an authorised rebranding to a commercial transfer or unauthorised takeover. Neither Among nor the platform’s operators had publicly clarified the circumstances surrounding the change in the reports available by October 11, 2026.

Uganda has previously experienced a major social media breach involving Parliament’s official account in May 2023. However, unlike that incident, which Parliament publicly confirmed as a hacking incident, there is currently no independent verification that Among’s former account was compromised. For now, the account’s digital history confirms a change in identity, but the circumstances remain unclear. Until the parties involved provide an explanation, questions about ownership, consent and control of the influential account remain unanswered.
