The newly declared King of Tooro, Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, has promised to work with the people of the kingdom to restore Tooro to what he described as its former glory.

In his first recorded address to his subjects, the new monarch called for unity and cooperation as he begins his journey on the Tooro throne.

King Nyabongo said his responsibility would not be limited to occupying the throne, but would involve working closely with his subjects to strengthen the kingdom.

“But I tell you, we will work for your kingdom. We will restore Tooro Kingdom to its former glory, and you will be proud of it,” he said.

The King added that although he had been enthroned as the new monarch, he could not accomplish the task alone.

“I have been enthroned as your king, but I cannot work alone. I will work with you,” Nyabongo told his subjects.

His address came shortly after Musuuga, or Chief Prince, Charles Kamurasi officially declared him king during the burial of the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.

The declaration was made at St John’s Cathedral during the September 12 burial ceremony for the late monarch.

Nyabongo’s emergence as king follows a succession dispute that has divided opinions within the Tooro royal family and Babiito clan.

Oyo’s immediate family had rejected the selection of Nyabongo and instead supported another individual identified as a previously unknown son of the late king.
