Police have arrested a private security guard as investigations continue into the death of Afrigo Band founder and veteran musician Moses Matovu.

The suspect has been identified as Vincent Nsamba, an employee of security firm SG, who detectives reportedly picked up in Nansana hours after Matovu died on September 24, 2026.

Matovu, aged 77, was rushed to Kibuli Hospital after a confrontation in Kibuli. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Early reports suggested that the veteran musician had been attacked by suspected thugs, but a later eyewitness account presented a different version of events.

According to the eyewitness who spoke to NTV, Matovu was escorting a woman to her rented home when he was confronted by a man who was reportedly believed to be her boyfriend.

The witness alleged that an argument developed into a physical confrontation, during which the man allegedly punched Matovu, causing him to fall and sustain serious injuries.

Police, however, have not yet publicly confirmed the eyewitness account as the definitive explanation for Matovu’s death, and detectives are continuing to establish what exactly happened.

The woman involved has been identified as Rose Tumusiime, reportedly from Ntungamo District. She remains in police custody as detectives question her and seek more information about the events leading to the musician’s death.

The arrest of Nsamba is expected to help investigators piece together the circumstances surrounding the confrontation. Police are also expected to examine statements from witnesses and other evidence gathered during the investigation.

Matovu was one of Uganda’s most recognised musicians and a leading figure in the country’s live-band music scene. He founded Afrigo Band in 1975 and led the group for about five decades. He was scheduled to be buried in Kyanja on September 25, 2026.
