Hoima district leaders, led by the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Rogers Mbabazi, launched construction of 17 kilometres of district roads to improve the district’s transport network.

The road construction will cost over two hundred million shillings (shs200m).

It will include a 12-kilometre Haibaale to Hanga-Buhirigi road in Bombo sub-county and a five-kilometre Kamugole-Lyato-Kikyora road in Buseruka sub-county.

According to the budget, the 5 km Kamugole-Lyato-Kikyora road in Buseruka sub-county will cost shs73.25m, whereas the 12km Haibaale-Hanga-Buhirigi road in Bombo sub-county is estimated at shs128.7m.

The development follows a long-standing community outcry over poor access roads to essential public service delivery points like health facilities, markets, schools, among others.

Speaking during the construction launch, Chris Kihangire, the Acting Hoima District Engineer, noted that the Haibaale-Hanga-Buhirigi road will connect four primary schools in Buhirigi, Hanga, Kitemba, among others and also two markets in Hanga and Buhirigi.

“The roads which have been launched for construction will also be equally in economic transformation since there will be improved access to market centres for farmers as well as other business people,” he said.

Uthuman Mugisa Mubaraka, Hoima district LC5 chairperson, has called on residents to make sure that they properly use these roads by not damaging them.

“We request the communities using these roads take full responsibility for handling them well since they will help them link to different economic areas, markets, schools, among others,” Uthuman urged.

Meanwhile, residents are showing maximum appreciation for the efforts by the district authorities to ensure better road networks in the areas.

John Adubango, a fishmonger, noted that the road will help in loss reduction while transporting commodities to the marketplaces.

Other individuals, including Ochaki Opio, said the roads will not only ease access to markets, but also ease access for their children to schools.

The roads will be constructed using part of the shs1b road fund released in the first quarter of the current financial year.
