The Church of Uganda has broken its silence over a viral video showing a priest and a local leader involved in a physical confrontation during a Sunday service in Abim District.

The incident happened at All Saints Church of Uganda in Abim, North Karamoja Diocese, involving retired priest Rev. Canon Richard Ongom and congregant Innocent Oyoo, who serves as an LC2 chairperson in the area.

According to reports, the disagreement started during announcements towards the end of the church service. What began as a dispute reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation, leaving church members shocked by the incident captured on video.

Abim District Police Commander SP Moses Olang said Oyoo allegedly tried to make an announcement without first notifying the priest presiding over the service. Church communications officer Adams Sadiiki said anyone who wants to make an announcement during a service is expected to first seek permission from the priest in charge.

The Acting Provincial Secretary of the Church of Uganda, Balaam Muheebwa, said the matter had been handed over to the appropriate Church structures to establish what exactly led to the confrontation.

Meanwhile, police have opened investigations after receiving complaints from both Ongom and Oyoo and have reportedly recorded statements from the two men and some witnesses.The Church of Uganda has urged calm as both Church officials and police continue with their investigations.
