A number of prominent Ugandan entrepreneurs, business leaders and company executives have emerged among the biggest individual stock market investors on the Uganda Securities Exchange (USE), holding significant stakes in listed companies across different sectors.
A review of shareholder disclosures from several listed companies shows that Charles Mbire and Sudhir Ruparelia are among the leading individual investors with publicly identifiable holdings in Uganda’s stock market.
Charles Mbire stands out as one of the largest individual investors, with disclosed stakes in companies including MTN Uganda and Bank of Baroda Uganda.
His identified holdings are estimated to have a market value of about Shs408.72 billion based on available market prices.
Businessman Sudhir Ruparelia also features prominently among Uganda’s biggest individual investors, with holdings in companies such as Bank of Baroda Uganda, Stanbic Uganda Holdings and dfcu Limited.
His disclosed investments across these listed companies are estimated at about Shs66.36 billion, placing him among the most notable private investors on the local equities market.

Other individuals identified with significant holdings include Augustus Ceasor Mulenga, Emmanuel Katongole, George Willy Baguma, Frederick Kitaka Mutebi, Joseph Tukuratiire, Sylvia Mulinge and Andrew Bugembe.
These investors have interests spread across different sectors, including telecommunications, banking, pharmaceuticals and manufacturing, showing the diversity of Uganda’s listed companies attracting private capital.
Despite the presence of wealthy individual investors, institutions remain the biggest drivers of trading activity on the Uganda Securities Exchange. In 2025, institutional investors accounted for the majority of equity turnover, contributing about 81 percent of total market activity.
Individual investors, however, continue to play an important role in Uganda’s capital markets by providing long-term investment and supporting ownership of local companies.
The growth of individual participation in the stock market reflects increasing interest among Ugandans in investing beyond traditional businesses and exploring opportunities through shares in publicly listed companies.
Uganda’s stock market continues to attract investors looking for opportunities in established companies, with sectors such as banking, telecommunications and manufacturing remaining among the key areas where major individual shareholders have built significant positions.
