Hundreds of business operators along the streets of Masindi Municipality have been chased as the authorities implement the trade order policy within the Central Business District (CBD).
The enforcement, which was implemented last week on Monday, evicted food vendors and illegal Kiosk operators. The traders have been told to relocate to alternative markets.
The operations affected CBD as well as Kijura and Kirasa mini towns.
Daniel Kasala, the Masindi municipal town clerk, told journalists that the move was intended to restore order and prepare the municipality for the upcoming Uganda Cities and Municipalities Infrastructure Development (UCMID) project.
Kasala ordered vendors who are still operating on the streets to vacate immediately and relocate to the gazetted markets designated by the municipality.
“We want to ensure the town is organised and ready to benefit from planned urban development projects,” Kasala said.”
He added that the exercise would be continuous. “The exercise is going to be continuous. And again, it is not just here in Masindi only but nationwide,” he told journalists.
“We have given people ample time by talking to them through media channels like radios and explaining to them; telling them to go to those spaces which are designated. We are doing these according to rules and regulations and expect people to comply,” he said.
However, during the enforcement, some people were welcoming, while others condemned it, saying it would take time for them to reorganise themselves and get used to the new environment.
