Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) mobiliser and politician Daudi Kabanda has assured Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba that the planned demonstration against the Turkish Embassy will attract massive support, saying the group is ready to take action over the continued stay of government critic Fred Kajubi Lumbuye in Turkey.

Kabanda made the remarks while responding to Gen. Muhoozi’s announcement that PLU would hold a demonstration at the Turkish Embassy on September 1, 2026.

“Afande, PLU is going to shake Kampala on 1st of September, 2026. The Turks have been given enough time to produce Lumbuye but they have deliberately refused. They will now know that Uganda is a sovereign state,” Kabanda stated.

The comments come after Gen. Muhoozi announced that PLU would demonstrate at the Turkish Embassy, saying all concerned parties had already been notified.

“PLU shall demonstrate at the Turkish embassy in force on the 1st of September without fail! All concerned have been notified,” Gen. Muhoozi said.

The planned demonstration is connected to demands by Gen. Muhoozi and his supporters for Turkish authorities to hand over Fred Lumbuye, a Ugandan blogger and outspoken government critic who has been based in Turkey.

Lumbuye has for years used social media platforms to criticise President Yoweri Museveni’s government, making him a controversial figure in Uganda’s political discussions.

Government supporters have accused him of spreading information they consider harmful, while his supporters have described him as a political commentator exercising his views.

The dispute surrounding Lumbuye has continued to attract attention because it involves Uganda’s relationship with Turkey and questions about how foreign countries handle individuals facing demands from their home governments.

Kabanda said PLU members believe enough time has been given to Turkish authorities to respond to Uganda’s concerns over Lumbuye.

He argued that the planned demonstration would send a message that Uganda should be treated as a sovereign country whose concerns must be respected.

The Turkish Embassy in Kampala represents Türkiye’s diplomatic interests in Uganda and is located in Kololo, Kampala.

The planned protest has generated debate among Ugandans, with some supporting the move as a defence of national interests while others questioning the diplomatic approach being taken.

Gen. Muhoozi, who chairs PLU and also serves as Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, has continued to use his public platforms to communicate on issues involving the group and national matters.

The September 1 event is expected to attract attention because of Gen. Muhoozi’s position as a senior military officer and political leader.

Kabanda’s statement reflects the strong support among PLU members for Gen. Muhoozi’s position on the Lumbuye matter.

He said supporters are prepared to gather in large numbers and demonstrate what he described as Uganda’s determination to defend its interests.

The issue has also raised wider discussions about freedom of expression, diplomatic relations and the responsibilities of governments when dealing with citizens abroad.

Turkey and Uganda have maintained diplomatic relations, with cooperation existing in areas including trade, investment and other areas of partnership.

However, the Lumbuye matter has created tensions among some political actors, particularly those who believe Turkey should take action requested by Ugandan authorities.

As the September 1 date approaches, attention is expected to remain on PLU’s mobilisation efforts and the possible response from authorities.

Security preparations around the Turkish Embassy may also become a focus as officials consider how to manage the planned gathering.

For now, Kabanda has maintained that PLU will proceed with the demonstration and that the event will show the strength of the organisation’s support.

The coming days will determine how the planned protest unfolds and what impact it may have on discussions surrounding Fred Lumbuye, Uganda-Turkey relations and political activism.
