Airtel Uganda rolls out nationwide road safety campaign amid persistent road crashes

Airtel Uganda has launched a nationwide road safety awareness campaign, leveraging its vast communication network and leadership voices to promote responsible road use and help curb the growing number of traffic crashes across the country.

The initiative comes at a time when Uganda continues to grapple with increasing road accidents that have claimed lives and left families and communities in mourning.

By utilising its digital platforms, Airtel aims to directly influence behavior among millions of subscribers.

Under the campaign, road safety messages are being disseminated through SMS alerts, as well as integrated into end-of-call notifications and transaction messages ensuring consistent engagement with users during their everyday mobile interactions.

Airtel Uganda’s Executive Committee has also taken an active role, releasing a series of awareness videos targeting motorists, boda boda riders, cyclists, passengers, and pedestrians, urging them to adopt safer practices on the road.

Speaking on the initiative, Airtel Uganda Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Soumendra Sahu, emphasised the importance of individual responsibility in preventing road crashes.

“Every journey ends somewhere important at home, at work, at school, or with loved ones waiting for us. Through the platforms available to us, we want to remind Ugandans that the choices we make on the road matter,” Sahu said.

He highlighted key safety measures including observing speed limits, avoiding distractions such as mobile phone use while driving, refraining from driving under the influence of alcohol, wearing seat belts and helmets, and ensuring vehicles are roadworthy.

The campaign also calls on motorcyclists and passengers to consistently wear helmets, while pedestrians are encouraged to remain vigilant and use designated crossing points.

Airtel Uganda noted that the initiative aligns with its broader commitment to leveraging technology and connectivity to drive positive social impact within communities.

The telecom company further extended condolences to families who have lost loved ones in road accidents and wished a quick recovery to those injured, reinforcing the urgency of collective action to improve road safety nationwide.
