Kikuube security talks tough on illegal fishing

The Kikuube district security committee, headed by the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Godwin Angalia have emphasised the critical need for fishing communities along Lake Albert to observe and desist from violating current fishing regulations put in place.

Emphasis came after the committee witnessed the elections of the village fishing community management committees in Nkoondo 1 and other landing sites in Buhuuka parish, Kyangwali sub-county.

This was one of the strategies of implementing the Presidential orders on illegal fishing in the country’s Lakes.

During the meeting, Angalia disclosed that the new fishing regulations are well-designed and must follow standard operating procedures.

He urged every community to follow to avoid illegal actions.

Using approved boats and fishing nets is among the key elements for fishermen.

“The new fishing regulations provide that every fisherman is required to use approved types and sizes of boats and nets before moving to the Lake for fishing,” the RDC emphasised.

Angalia also noted that the presidential directives mandate the local and indigenous fishermen and women to manage the issues of fishing on the lakes within their respective localities.

In Kikuube district, the regulations will be implemented along different landing sites, including Nkoondo 1, Nkoondo 2, Nyawaiga and Sebigoro landing sites, among others.

Meanwhile, the elected committee members include chairperson, vice chairperson, secretary, publicity and defence.

Speaking on behalf of Lt. Col. Mercy Tukahirwa, the deputy commander of FPU, SP Maj Frank Kanzira at Kanara landing site in Kanara town council, Ntoroko district, said that they remain committed to implementing the government’s commitment to ensuring sustainable fishing in Uganda.

Kiburara John, the Kikuube district fisheries officer, said that their efforts to eliminate unwanted fishing gear through investigation are underway.

According to him, the new executives will help them since they are at designated landing sites.

“We have done our best to educate fishermen at landing sites about the proper nets and boats that should be used as per the guidelines.

“And so, we have started investigations to hook out all the unwanted fishing gears within the landing sites across the district,” he said.
