‘Ex-NRM rebels in Kyoga cry foul:’ Amb. Amule, Adupa demand NRM recognition after backing UPC

Aolatar | A section of National Resistance Movement (NRM) mobilisers and former flag bearers in Kyoga County who openly broke ranks to campaign for the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) in the 2026 parliamentary elections are now demanding formal recognition and reconciliation with the ruling party’s top leadership.

The group, which includes Felix Adupa (the official NRM flag bearer for Kyoga County) and Ambassador Doreen Amule (the former Amolatar District Woman MP), is facing a severe political backlash from local party loyalists who view their post-election demands as double standards.

During the heated parliamentary race, both Adupa and Ambassador Amule shocked the NRM fraternity in the Lango sub-region by throwing their financial weight, structures, and political influence behind the UPC candidate.

Sources within the sub-region state that the duo openly mobilised against official NRM positions, delivering a significant blow to the ruling party’s cohesion in Kyoga. Their defection to the frontline of the opposition UPC campaign left many local NRM structures fractured and angry.

Demanding a return to the fold

Following the conclusion of the polls, the same politicians have reportedly launched a quiet but aggressive campaign demanding “recognition” and “re-absorption” into the NRM party structure.

In several closed-door meetings and public utterances, the politicians and their core mobilisers have expressed frustration over being sidelined by the party secretariat in Kampala.

They argue that despite their tactical support for the UPC candidate, they remain NRM at heart and deserve a seat at the table when regional rewards, appointments, and development funds are being distributed.

“They are crying out for recognition now because the political reality has set in,” a senior NRM mobiliser in Amolatar, who preferred anonymity, told this publication.

“You cannot cook your food in a UPC pot and then run back to NRM demanding to be served the biggest portion of the meat. It is pure political opportunism.”

Backlash from loyalists

The demands have sparked a fierce debate within the Lango NRM leadership. Loyal cadres are calling upon the NRM Secretary General and the party’s disciplinary committee to reject any attempts at cheap reconciliation without clear penalties.

Local NRM supporters argue that rewarding politicians who openly sabotage the party creates dangerous precedents for future electoral cycles.

As the NRM secretariat watches the unfolding drama in Kioga County, it remains to be seen whether the party will grant Amb. Amule and Felix Adupa the political amnesty they are crying for, or if they will face disciplinary action for ideological indiscipline.
