Uganda joined the rest of the world to commemorate international women’s day on March 8 with national celebrations at Kololo Independence grounds in Kampala.
The government of Uganda chose “Scaling up Investment to Accelerate Access to Justice for All Women and Girls in Uganda” as this year’s theme. Vice President Jessica Alupo was the chief guest at an event attended by top government officials and development partners.
Unable to attend due to a regional engagement in Tanzania, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni was sent messages by women and girl students from Amolatar district some of whom made it to Kololo.
They termed the event “momentous occasion” during the flag-off ceremony held at the office of the Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Obonyo Magwar.
Aceng Robinah, a student from Amolatar Secondary School and the Secretary for Interschool Affairs within the Uganda National Students’ Association (UNSA), expressed gratitude to Museveni for his reelection campaign launch at their school.
She expressed a strong desire for president-elect Museveni to return for a celebratory event following his poll victory.
“As Amolatar SS, we possess vast land that remains largely undeveloped. We urge the President to provide agricultural machinery such as tractors so we can utilise this land effectively,” she appealed.
The initiative, Aceng said, will greatly support their new competence-based curriculum.
Atala Jacinta, representing local cattle dealers, extended her gratitude to Museveni and applauded him for reelection success.
She called for enhanced movement of livestock across Lake Kyoga and beyond, emphasising that such freedom is crucial for sustaining their women’s businesses.
Bwire Derrick Were, Executive Director of Sowers of Love, expressed enthusiasm for the women’s initiative and desires to engage with the President.
Were noted that their zeal inspired the organization to contribute support for the women’s journey to Kololo.
Acana Judith, the chairperson of the women’s delegation, expressed her sincere appreciation for the support from Sowers of Love. She reiterated a commitment to diligently work toward empowering women in the district.
In a symbolic gesture of gratitude, the cattle traders also pledged a bull as a gift for President Museveni, demonstrating their respect and appreciation for his leadership.
Meanwhile, Amolatar district local government has scheduled its Women’s Day celebration for March 18, further solidifying the leadership’s commitment to recognising and uplifting the contributions of women and girls in society.
The global theme for the 2026 IWD commemoration is “Give to Gain” while the United Nation’s theme is “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls.”
