Kiira region: IGP boosts police family welfare with 1,000 chicks

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abas Byakagaba, has enhanced the welfare of police officers’ families in Kiira Region through the delivery of 1,000 chicks to spouses of serving officers.

The chicks were delivered on Saturday by the Head of Production under the Directorate of Welfare, Production and Sports, SSP Godwin Ochaki, at Jinja Police Barracks.

They were received by the Deputy Regional Police Commander (RPC) Kiira Region, SSP Christopher Katumba, alongside team leaders of the Jinja Police Spouses Group.

The initiative, part of the police hatchery project at the Police Training School in Kabalye, Masindi district, sparked joy among the beneficiaries.

Spouses of police officers expressed gratitude to the IGP Abas Byakagaba, the Director of Welfare, Production and Sports AIGP Hadijja Namutebi, SSP Godwin Ochaki, and the RPC Kiira Region SSP Charles Nsaba for championing the project.

Addressing the beneficiaries, SSP Ochaki cautioned them to strictly follow vaccination schedules during and after brooding, ensure prompt use of disinfectants, and provide proper lighting and heat.

He explained that the kuroiler chicks are hybrid birds suitable for both egg and meat production, making them highly productive.

SSP Ochaki further noted that when well managed, the project reflects the IGP’s commitment to improving the welfare of police officers’ families, in addition to the planned enhanced salaries and promotions expected in 2026 and subsequent years.

Deputy RPC SSP Christopher Katumba thanked the IGP and government for prioritising the welfare of police officers and their families.

He urged spouses to manage the poultry project properly, describing it as space-efficient, highly demanded, and a reliable source of nutritious products.

Some beneficiaries, including Mama Dandu, Leah Among, and Irene Ayenyo, said they would “protect the gains” come January 15, citing continued government support towards police officers’ welfare.

They called on spouses in other barracks to support the same message.
