Kiira regional police have recovered a rusty firearm that had been illegally hidden in a garden in Nawampanda parish, Butagaya sub-county, Jinja district.

The “dead gun” was recovered during a successful operation carried out under the leadership of SSP Charles Nsaba on September 20, 2025, marking an important step in ongoing efforts to enhance security in the Busoga sub-region.

The gun, which was abandoned in a sack together with fifteen rounds of ammunition, was discovered by a resident, Monica Namugaya, in Busowoko Central.

She had gone for her usual gardening work when she unexpectedly came across the suspicious package.

Without hesitation, she reported the matter to the chairperson of the veterans of Nawampanda parish, Shaban Mazereba, who quickly alerted the area GISO and the police authorities for immediate response.

Following the alert, a joint security team swiftly arrived at the scene. The team included Major Ishaka, the commanding officer of the 129 Battalion based in Buikwe district, alongside police operatives.

Their joint effort ensured the safe recovery of the rusty gun and the accompanying ammunition.

Preliminary reports indicate that the gun is suspected to have been used in terrorising communities within the Busoga sub-region and other parts of the country before it was abandoned.

The Regional Police Commander of Kiira region, SSP Charles Nsaba, extended his gratitude to Monica Namugaya and the residents of Butagaya sub-county for their vigilance and goodwill.

He emphasised that community cooperation remains vital in fighting crime and maintaining peace.
