Olipa promises unity as he takes chair of NRM Lira City West

Businessman-turned-politician Tony Olipa Lipton was officially declared NRM chairperson for Lira City West Division after a contentious but peaceful election held on May 19.

He defeated Ocen Tonny. Speaking after his victory, he called for unity and praised President Museveni’s democratic leadership within the party.

Lira City NRM registrar Thomas Okello confirmed Olipa’s win, and said election was free and fair although it’s a direct polling election.

Olipa had pledged reconciliation in the NRM party. “Let’s work together—NRM is our shared home.”

From the grassroots, he has vowed to recruit new members, especially the youth. “I’m also promising to end factionalism in local party structures including anti-segregation.”

During a media address on Wednesday at Lipton Palace Hotel in Obuto Welo, Lira City West Division, Olipa commended national chairman of NRM also President of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni for fostering democracy within the party and across the nation.

He said Museveni has allowed individuals the opportunity to run for various leadership positions.

Olipa encouraged those who previously contested against him to return and collaborate for the advancement of the ruling party, emphasizing the need to strengthen the NRM.

He also pledged to implement significant changes by introducing new members into the party.

Furthermore, he urged all participants to support NRM candidates, regardless of their identities, and reassured voters not to lose hope, as there are more elections scheduled for May 23, and July 2025, for both district and parliamentary positions (flag bearers).

He described the election as a friendly gathering among party members, highlighting the democratic principles upheld by the NRM government.

Additionally, he appealed to those who supported him but were unsuccessful to return and work together.

Olipa called for unity among the members and expressed his commitment to combat segregation within the party while continuing to attract new members.

He stated that Lira City West requires action-oriented individuals rather than mere talkers, noting that his business initiatives have created jobs and opportunities for all.

“I am here to eliminate leadership segregation. The NRM is not a platform for personal ambitions,” declared Olipa, reflecting on his journey that began in 2011 as a youth councillor in Alebtong.

“This victory proves NRM rewards merit, not connections,” Olipa stated

“I went from selling merchandise to shaping policies—that’s the NRM opportunity story.”
