Lira | Lugazi FC goalkeeper Abraham Opio has had a successful knee surgery from Mulago National Referral Hospital, tndNews understands.
Opio had been dealing with a knee injury since last year before surgery on the first weekend of May.
As his surgery was scheduled for May 3 or 4, 2025, his supporters in Lango and beyond rallied behind him, organizing a charity game against Lira City-based Big League team Blacks Power FC.
In addition to the shs505,000 raised during that game, Lira City woman MP and Health Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero contributed an additional shs40 million.
“The knee surgery was done successfully with support from Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng who cleared all the medical bills including flying an expert from Ghana,” Opio told tndNews last week.
Opio is overjoyed and confident that he will be able to return to football after his recovery, and he thanked everyone who helped pay for his surgery.
Under coach Bob Obira, who is currently the coach of Blacks Power FC, he played football for Lira Sports Academy.
He has played for various teams and competed for honours including Masaza Cup tournament; Lango Province, and Lugazi FC.
The Lugazi FC goalkeeper stated that his “heartwarming story to full recovery highlights Dr. Aceng’s kindness and his football career.”
Opio, who is from the Dokolo district, is talented.
