Cultural leaders meet in Mbale City to forge unity for development

In a rare show of unity and shared purpose, five Kings and Cultural Leaders from across Eastern and Northern Uganda converged at Mbale Resort Hotel on Saturday, May 10, 2025.

The consultative meeting was hailed as a milestone in strengthening cultural collaboration, and also focused on promoting heritage preservation and aligning traditional leadership with Uganda’s development agenda.

The meeting brought together His Royal Highness (HRH) Jude Mike Mudoma, Umukhuka of Bugisu; HRH Paul Sande Emoloit, Emorimor of Teso; HRH Eng. Dr. Michael Moses Odongo Okune, Won Nyaci of Lango Cultural Institution, HRH Obara Robert, Omwenengo of Bugwe; and Peter Swilikei Kissa, the Cultural Leader of Sebei.

Addressing issues of mutual cultural interest, the leaders commended President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni for his unwavering support toward cultural institutions.

They lauded the President for recognizing the critical role traditional leadership plays in shaping and sustaining Uganda’s national identity and socio-economic progress.

The Kings also extended appreciation to the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development under the stewardship of Betty Amongi Ongom.

They praised the Ministry’s effective management of cultural affairs and its continuous efforts in ensuring the survival and integration of heritage values into Uganda’s governance and development frameworks.

A special acknowledgment was reserved for HRH Isabaruli Mwantyansozi Mwogezi, Sabaruli of Buruuli, who serves as the Chairperson of the Kings and Cultural Leaders Forum.

The leaders recognized his commendable coordination and leadership in bringing cultural institutions together for a common cause.

In a joint declaration, the Leaders resolved to deepen cooperation, collaboration, and mutual support among themselves and their respective communities emphasizing the need for peace, unity, and stability especially during the ongoing election period.

They appealed to all stakeholders, including political actors and citizens, to place national interest above personal ambitions.

The leaders further pledged to support government programs, particularly those designed to drive Uganda’s socio-economic transformation.

They echoed their commitment to aligning with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s Pan-African ideology, which promotes self-reliance, unity, and shared prosperity for the African continent.

“As custodians of culture and the voice of our people, we are determined to walk with the government and our communities toward a future that respects our heritage and builds sustainable development,” they affirmed.
