Data shows Covid-19 has penetrated ‘cities, upcountry towns and villages’

538 people remain admitted as 4 die, 1,016 test positive according to a new data released Saturday.

 Oyam – January 8, 2022: More than two million Covid-19 tests have been done in Uganda since the country embarked on testing years ago. 

Of the 2,205,686 tests done, 152,778 have tested positive – the latest data from the Ministry of Health shows.

The same Ministry Saturday evening announced 1,016 new cases out of 8,078 samples tested on January 6, 2022.

Four new deaths due to the pandemic have been recorded – bringing total fatalities to 3,337. Recoveries stand at 98,679.

The cumulative active cases at health facilities remain at 538 as of January 6. The test positivity rate has declined to 12.6% from 20.3% on January 4.

Fresh figures 

In its breakdown of January 6 cases, the Ministry of Health says 1,001 were alerts and contacts: Kampala 492, Wakiso, 176, Buliisa 40, Mayuge 36, Kiruhura 32, Adjumani 33, Mbarara 25, Luweero 24; Jinja 20, Soroti 12, Nakasongola, 9.

Others are Oyam 11, Tororo 9, Gulu 6, Kiryandongo 6, Lyantonde 6, Masaka 3, Nebbi 3, Masindi 2, Hoima 3, Kalungu 2, Kabarole 2.

More districts include Kikuube 2, Busia 6, Kitgum 2, Mukono 1, Mbale 2, Arua 1, Namisindwe 1, Butaleja 4, Amuru 16, Kayunga 1, Mbale 1, Kalaki 2, Kitgum 1, Kanungu 1 and Kyotera 6.

Fifteen (15) truckers from Tororo 7, Kyotera 6 and Amuru tested positive for the virus.

Addressing the country Friday on the Covid-19 situation as schools reopen on January 10, Health Minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng said Uganda is in the third wave of the pandemic.

“The Ministry of Health would like to guide that testing of learners prior to going back to school or on arrival is not an official position of the Covid-19 national task force,” she said.

Weeks before, there were reports some schools were planning to reject unvaccinated pupils and students from accessing school premises.
