Dr. Samuel Opio Acuti, Member of Parliament for Kole North, who initially entered the legislative house as an independent candidate, has officially joined the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party – the yellow bus.

This announcement of his transition was made on Monday, April 14, 2025, during a meeting with Kole district NRM leaders at their Aboke offices.

In his address, Dr. Opio Acuti, who also holds the position of Secretary General of the Lango Parliamentary Group and serves as Vice Chairperson of the Health Committee in the Parliament of Uganda, highlighted the significant progress achieved in Lango and Kole North over the past three years through collaboration with the NRM government.

He pointed to several key developments, including the reconstruction of the 66-kilometer Lira-Kole-Kamdini road, the construction of the 191kilometer Rwenkunye-Apac-Lira-Puranga road, the establishment of Akii Bua Stadium for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and the initiation of livestock compensation programs, among others.

He mentioned various improvements within his constituency, such as the extension of electricity services, the construction of new health center IIIs, the upgrading of Ayara HCII to HCIII, and the installation of five new telecommunication masts.

“I have come to view the NRM government as a fertile ground where the seeds of development I have sown have flourished and matured. However, like any garden, we must also address the weeds,” he said.

“It is crucial to eliminate certain weeds, particularly corruption, which obstructs service delivery to our citizens. I have observed that corruption transcends party lines, affecting even districts led by opposition leaders,” he stated.

Kole district NRM administrative secretary KK Odoc Serafino confirmed Dr. Opio Acuti’s transition to the NRM party from his previous status as an independent candidate in the 2021 elections.

Odoc expressed strong support for the new member, asserting confidence that in the upcoming elections, Kole district will elect only NRM candidates to Parliament.

Lillian Anyati, the NRM chairperson for Kole district, expressed her support for Dr. Samuel Opio Acuti, noting that he signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the NRM party two years ago.

Chairperson Anyati emphasized that the actions of MP Opio in the Ugandan Parliament are beneficial for the community, urging all members to support any NRM candidates running in Kole district.

Additionally, Judith Alyek, the woman member of Parliament for Kole district and chairperson of Lango Parliamentary Group, expressed gratitude to MP Opio for rejoining the ruling NRM party.

During the meeting, Alyek mentioned her efforts in the district to advocate for improved service delivery from the NRM government, believing that this will strengthen the party’s position in the area.

MP Opio stated that he intends to participate in the NRM primaries scheduled for July of this year.

In the Acholi sub-region, MPs Ojara Mapenduzi and Anthony Akol, who were previously affiliated with the FDC party, have all joined the NRM.
