Somalia

Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga, Commander Land Forces of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces, has promised the troops in Somalia strong support.

Lt Gen Muhanga made the promise on Monday, April 7, 2025, at the end of a three-day working visit with Ugandan troops from the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) and the United Nations Guard Unit XI (UNGU XI).

The visit was intended to assess the welfare, operational readiness, and ongoing efforts of the UPDF in combating the Al-Shabaab insurgency in Somalia.

Lt Gen Muhanga told officers and militants in Mogadishu, “This visit is part of my routine to check on and boost the morale of our troops in operational areas.”

He praised the UPDF’s performance in other operations, particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) have been severely degraded and are no longer a threat to Uganda.

Concerning troop welfare, the CLF assured personnel of continued support from strategic leadership, emphasizing the army’s commitment to career development, welfare, and consistent promotion within the ranks.

During his visit to UN Guard Unit XI, Lieutenant General Muhanga praised the troops’ discipline, high morale, and dedication to duty.

He emphasized the significance of physical and mental well-being, urging soldiers to prioritize their health, saying, “Your health is paramount; take care of it at all times.”

On financial matters, he encouraged soldiers to continue saving through the Wazalendo SACCO, stating that those who plan now will have a better future.

Brig Gen Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga, the Sector One Commander, thanked the CLF for his ongoing support and guidance despite his hectic schedule.
