Dokolo South MP aspirant Richard Obura welcomes NRM electoral roadmap

Dokolo | Richard Obura, a parliamentary aspirant from Dokolo South, has praised the NRM Electoral Commission for releasing a preliminary roadmap for party primaries.

The ruling party primaries will take place before the 2026 general elections. Obura describes it as “a timely guide for candidates’ preparations.”

Speaking to reporters in Lira City on Thursday, Obura expressed his satisfaction with the schedule issued by the commission chaired by Dr. Tanga Odoi.

“This early roadmap gives us adequate time to strategize for both primaries and the general election. I commend chairman Odoi and secretary general Richard Todwong for strengthening the party’s democratic processes.”

The aspirant emphasized the importance of the roadmap in ensuring fair competition among aspirants [candidates], allowing for proper campaign planning, and assisting voters in making informed decisions.

Obura made a strong appeal to Dokolo South voters to elect leaders with visionary plans rather than those seeking office for personal reasons.

“The youth must elect representatives committed to real development, not just maintaining the status quo,” he said.

The businessman-turned-politician took aim at the long-serving MP Felix Okot Ogong, who is currently serving his 11th Parliamentary term, vowing to challenge him “from primaries to general elections.”

NRM seeks to rejuvenate its leadership nationwide. He also stated that young aspirants should advocate for generational transition in Lango sub-region politics.

The roadmap is now available to the public, and when the window opens, Obura and others in the race are anticipated to formally submit their nominations.

“True change comes when electorates choose leaders based on future potential rather than past promises,” Obura told tndNews.

The Dokolo South race is a microcosm of the NRM’s broader succession debates, putting the party’s ability to balance experience and new leadership while maintaining electoral dominance in northern Uganda to the test.

Obura’s early mobilization indicates a more competitive pre-election environment in the constituency.
