Husband’s one slap ‘kills’ wife in Lira City

Domestic violence cases continue to rise across the North Kyoga Region (Lango sub-region), with the most recent incident sounding more odd.

According to SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the PRO of North Kyoga, territorial police in Lira City West Division have filed a case of murder by assault against Ajok Santa.

SP Okema said the deceased’s age had yet to be determined. Her long-term husband, Otiri George, beat her.

He said in a statement on Tuesday that Ekwang Nelson reported the crime to police.

It was alleged that on April 7, 2025, at approximately 9:21 p.m., Otiri George got into a fight with his long-time wife Ajok Santa at Aminya cell, Amuca, Lira City West Division.

Their quarrel later turned into a fight, SP Okema added.

“However, Otiri allegedly slapped the wife badly in the face and fell on her back and became unconscious.”

She was picked up by neighbours who rushed her to Ronam Health Centre, where she died the next day around 8:30 a.m., according to Okema.

The OC CID, homicide team, and SOCO all paid visits to the scene and documented their findings.

The PRO added that relevant witnesses were interviewed and their statements recorded. The body was taken to Lira Regional Referral Hospital’s mortuary for postmortem examination.

The suspect was arrested and is currently in custody while files are being compiled.

The North Kyoga Region Police PRO described the incident as “quiet unfortunate.”

He added, “Of late, we are receiving so many cases of murders due to suspected theft, domestic misunderstanding, murder by assault at a bar, murder on suspicion that a person is practicing witchcraft, etc.”
