Alebtong | On February 22, 2025, Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party president Jimmy James Michael Akena led a delegation to Apala town council in Alebtong district, where he laid a wreath in memory of the fallen party member Erinasito Onyilo Tongokemo.
Onyilo died in 1976.

Akena, along with senior party officials and local leaders, paid tribute to the late UPC stalwart who played an important role in the party’s history.
The wreath-laying ceremony was held at a burial ground in Apala town council. He said the late made significant contributions to Uganda’s political landscape.
Akena emphasized the importance of remembering those who gave their lives for the party’s cause.
“We must never forget the sacrifices made by our leaders. They paved the way for a strong, people-centered political movement, and it is our duty to continue their legacy,” he said.
Similarly, he laid a wreath at Abia Technical Institute in memory of the 139 people killed by LRA rebels on February 4, 2004.

During the same tour, two party offices were officially opened: one in Alebtong Town Council and another in Akura Sub-County, Alebtong District.
These offices are expected to act as focal points for party activities, mobilization, and recruitment in the district.
Later, during an address to party supporters at Alira Primary School, Akena reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening UPC structures across the country ahead of the 2026 election.
“Our focus is to build a solid foundation at the grassroots. These offices will enhance our ability to engage with communities, address their concerns, and push forward the UPC agenda,” he remarked.

Akena also used the occasion to call for unity among party members and encourage them to collaborate in preparation for the upcoming elections.
“Our strength lies in our unity. Let us remain focused, work together, and ensure UPC remains a formidable force in Uganda’s politics,” he added.
With similar initiatives planned for other districts, Akena reaffirmed his commitment to repositioning the party as a major player in Uganda’s political landscape as he prepares to run for president in 2026.
The late Obote son used the occasion to call for unity among party members, urging them to register with the UPC party registers so that they can collaborate in preparation for the upcoming elections.
