Alongside Obed Lutale, Uganda’s top opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye is presently on trial at the military court.
Besigye was reportedly kidnapped in Nairobi, Kenya, and transported back to Uganda by military personnel.
The former FDC president and presidential candidate was in Nairobi for Martha Karua’s book launch.
Karua, a senior counsel in Kenyan legal circles, had invited his guest, Besigye.
The Ugandan government (the State) has charged Besigye and Obed of treachery among other charges. Both have denied the charges as their trials become increasingly contentious.
When Besigye was arrested, a group of Ugandans and politicians from both home and abroad demanded his unconditional release.
However, as the military trials continue, some Ugandans believe that Besigye, who has been denied access to his family, members of the Katonga road group, and outside food, is being forgotten.
On X, some Ugandans are expressing solidarity with the country’s most arrested man. Several netizens are concerned about the silence of human rights activists and opposition figures.
On Wednesday, Mathias Mpuuga, the former Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, appeared to respond to such concerns by calling for Besigye’s freedom.
On X, Mpuuga, the Democratic Alliance national coordinator wrote:
“It is 3 months since @kizzabesigye1 was kidnapped from Nairobi and has since been unjustly detained!
“No one can discount KB’s contribution to the fight for freedom, justice, and equality in Uganda. Silence at a time when his rights are being violated is a sign of betrayal. Let’s demand for his freedom. #FreeBesigye”
Martha Karua is leading a team of lawyers defending Besigye and Obed before the military court in Makindye Division, Kampala.
