The year 2025 started painfully for residents of Aganga parish, Ibuje sub-county in Apac district following a fatal shooting by a police officer.
The territorial police in Apac are looking into a tragic incident in which a police officer, PC Ikokole Richard Pius, shot and killed one person, according to a statement released by North Kyoga Region PRO SP Jimmy Patrick Okema on January 1.
He identified the deceased as Kabonesa Jesca, aged 30. PC Ikokole also injured two others: Apok Dorish, 28, and Obok Maxwell, 23.
The victims were shot during New Year’s celebrations around 12:30 am at Kungu Ferry landing site in Aganga parish, Ibuje sub-county.
According to SP Okema’s reports, the police officer was on guard duty when a group of 30-40 excited people, celebrating the start of 2025, began throwing stones at houses and police barracks, and then moved towards the ferry.
“It’s alleged the officer tried firing bullets in the air to scare them but all in vain, they continued and in the process stray bullets shot three people, killing one on spot injuring two others.
“The duo were rushed to Apac General Hospital for medical attention. The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still being investigated by the territorial police in Apac and a case of murder by shooting and attempted murder has been registered,” he added.
The alleged gun used has been recovered and exhibited, while the deceased body was conveyed to Apac Hospitals mortuary for postmortem examination.
“The officer is at large,” SP Okema revealed, urging calmness and cooperation from the community, relatives of the deceased, and victims.
“The Uganda Police Force pledges to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident to determine the facts and ensure that justice is served.”
