Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya is not dead, according to the latest update.
The National Unity Platform (NUP) MP was pronounced dead by multiple media outlets, and some politicians on Thursday morning.
Some cited the MP’s mother.
He has been in and out of the hospital since his election in 2021.
The legislator, known as “Mr Update,” is admitted at Rubaga Hospital in Kampala.
He has also spent time in prison with Allan Ssewanyana, MP for Makindye West, on treason and other charges following their arrest in 2021.
The two were granted bail, and the court case against them is still ongoing.
“He was very practical, he was a community leader and we shall very much miss him,” leader of opposition in Parliament, Joe Ssenyonyi, said on Thursday morning.
However, while addressing the media at Rubaga Hospital, Ssenyonyi said Doctors had told him and his team that he is “brain dead.”
The hospital Doctor also told the media of Ssegirinya’s current state, saying they can’t pronounce him dead yet.
Ssegirinya is 37 and has been battling with illnesses for years.
He had previously been flown to the Netherlands and Kenya for specialised medical treatment.
NUP party president Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine had posted on his X account, writing:
“Very sad news this morning. Our brother, our friend, our fellow leader Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya has passed on. Such a dark morning.
“Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un!
“The member of Parliament passed away from Rubaga hospital this morning. The sad news was confirmed by sources close to the family.”
