A UPDF soldier fatally shot a 25-year-old man in Apac district over a woman-related dispute.
The officer, RA 255575 Private Amali Jacob, 26, is assigned to the 101 Battalion’s Lacekocot Detachment in Pader district.
He was apprehended by police in the Apac district following an incident on January 7, 2025.
According to SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the PRO for the North Kyoga region, Amali allegedly shot and killed Okullo Haggai, a resident of Atek village, Adeni parish, Chegere sub-county, Apac.
On the evening of January 7, 2025, the suspect reportedly left his place of employment and made his way to Atek village.
When he got home, he and his friends went to a bar called Acanpe Nino (a poor person never sleeps) in Kidilani trading centre. Later that night, Jacob and Haggai disagreed about a woman named Auma Winnie, resulting in a physical altercation.
After the fight, the soldier left, but returned around 4:00 a.m. with a firearm and allegedly shot Haggai.
The police were promptly notified, and a murder case was filed in APAC. A team of police officers, led by the District CID from Apac CPS, as well as SOCO and canine units, went to the crime scene, according to SP Okema.
Witness statements were taken, and the suspect was later arrested and detained at Apac CPS, he added.
“The firearm used in the shooting has not yet been recovered, and efforts to locate it continue, as the suspect has not disclosed its whereabouts.
“Additionally, one of Jacob’s friends, identified as Olila, who was present at the bar, has also been arrested, along with Auma Winnie, to assist with the investigation.”
The deceased’s body has been transported to Apac Main Hospital, where it will remain until the postmortem examination is conducted.
This is a tragic incident, as it marks the second shooting murder in the Apac district in a week.
The same suspect was reportedly freed from Kinene Prison in Pader district in September 2024 after being charged with assaulting his boss at work.
