Kasese | On Monday evening, a UPDF soldier named RA/251424 Private Lukwang Isaac was killed.
Lukwang was attached to 5 Mountain Battalion based in Rusese, Kasese district. He reportedly entered a colleague’s home, picked up a gun, and began shooting randomly.
In the process, he injured a fellow soldier RA/ 251412, Private Alebu Joel.
The search for Lukwang began after he went missing, according to Maj Bilal Katamba, Public Information Officer, UPDF Mountain Division and Operation Shujaa.
He added that on Monday morning, around 4:00 a.m., he appeared at a UPDF border detachment in Kamukumbi and shot, killed, and took Private Kule Solomon’s sentry gun.
“The hunt for the rampaging soldier was intensified, and this (Monday) evening the soldier was put out of action by a UPDF squad dispatched to disarm him when he shot back at them,” Bilal added.
The two guns were recovered from the soldier and are now in safe hands, he said in a statement.
He said the UPDF sympathizes with the family of the soldier killed while on official duty and wishes the injured a speedy recovery.
According to Major Bilal, the UPDF mountain Division will establish a Board of Inquiry to investigate the incident.
