Lira |Known by his nickname “Uncle Dan,” Dr. Dan Okello enjoys widespread popularity in Lango sub-region. But, when he “shows an interest in leading people,” he is less preferred.
The leader of the Guna clan has lost two attempts to be the most prominent figure in Lango culture in recent times.
Dan ran for Won Nyaci office in a Lango Cultural Institution-organized election earlier this year. He was badly defeated.
Dan, a former candidate for Erute North MP, UPC party president, and Makerere University lecturer, refuses to give up on leadership just yet.
After losing earlier this year, he returned to the Lango Cultural Foundation, which is now led by the outgoing Won Nyaci Mzee Yosam Odur Ebii.
When he returned, his main goal was to gain “support” and succeed Mzee Odur. However, Dr. Richard Nam, Lango’s former prime minister, Benjamin Okii, and Dickson Ogwang Okul were in the queue.

Dan was hopeful that once an election was held, he would take over the cultural office.
When “Lango” went to the polls on October 11 to elect the new Won Nyaci, the results were not in Dan’s favor.
According to a final copy of the election results obtained by tndNews, the ambitious UPC man finished last.
He got 4,834 votes, representing 4%. Ogwang Dickson received 76,307 votes, accounting for 60%.
Okii Benat Benjamin received 12,513 votes, which equates to 10%, while Prof. Nam Richard received 31,920 votes, representing 25%.
According to Col. Dan Opito, chairperson of the Lango Cultural Foundation’s electoral commission, 672 votes were rejected, accounting for 1% of the total.
Voting took place both locally and in the diaspora, according to Col. Opito.
