Lira | On Friday, dozens of residents of Iwal and Ngetta in the Lira City East Division heard Oyam South MP Betty Amongi pitch her political ambitions to them.
Amongi has decided to leave Oyam South in favor of the Lira City Woman MP seat in 2026. With many months until the 2026 elections, she has already begun her campaign to gain support in the city.
Her immediate aides described the Friday event in Lira City East as one of her “inaugural campaign visits.”
She told those she met that she intended to unseat Dr. Jane Aceng Ocero, the current Lira City Woman MP.
Amongi and Aceng are ministers in the Ministries of Gender and Health, respectively.

Amongi made it clear that sympathy has no place in her political game, and that anyone who believes she will rely on sympathy is mistaken.
Hailing from Minakulu, Oyam, Amongi refers to Lira City as “my roots” and “will not lose.”

Minister Amongi spoke of her desire to address the social and economic issues confronting Lira City residents, which motivated her decision to run in 2026.
“After completing my studies at Makerere University, I returned to Apac to serve my community diligently for twenty years.
“Now, it is time for me to fully relocate to Lira City, my husband’s home, and contribute meaningfully,” Amongi told those she interacted with.
She gave sledgehammers to Got Ngetta stone traders and promised to continue supporting them in their economic transformation efforts.
