Thousands to attend the non-denominational youth conference in Dokolo

Dokolo |The Dokolo district Anglican youth leaders are on a mission to bring positive change to their community through a non-denominational youth conference.

This event, scheduled for December 12-14, 2024 at Dokolo Technical School, is expected to empower over 2,000 young people aged 13 to 40 from 30+ churches and denominations.

The conference’s theme, “Break Free from Evil,” was carefully chosen from the Holy Book of 1 Peter 3:11, and it aims to address the various challenges that the district’s youth face.

With an alarming increase in crime, illiteracy, and poverty in the district, youth leaders recognize the need for immediate action.

Speaking to this publication, Daniel Ogwal Obangamara, Youth Chairperson of Dokolo Urban Parish and Founder of the Obangamarowa Foundation, a Christian-based organization registered in Dokolo, stated that their mission is to transform the lives of vulnerable youth (school dropouts, teenage mothers, drug addicts) and youth who are unable to obtain an education (impoverished youth).

They also help single mothers and orphans with skills, guidance and counseling, and gospel outreach in the community. Ogwal stated that the conference aims to provide a platform for young people to break free from societal evils and become agents of positive change.

“Through various activities and discussions, the organizers hope to address issues such as youth unemployment, school dropouts, teenage pregnancy, and gangs known locally as “Owuwuk”, Ogwal explained.

According to him, the conference will feature an impressive lineup of speakers and facilitators, including Dr. Balaam, Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs, as the keynote speaker.

He also mentioned Rev. Canon Sylvesto Ocen, the host Archdeacon, Sam Atul, Mayor of the Lira City Council, and Rev. Captain Apollo Owi Kene, Diocesan Youth Worker, among others.

“With such experienced and influential personalities leading the discussions, the conference is sure to be impactful and inspiring for the attendees,” Ogwal added.

However, the success of this event is heavily dependent on the support and funding of local leaders, stakeholders, and organizations.

To raise the necessary funds, the youth leaders, led by Otuk Jasper, Youth Chairperson Dokolo Urban Archdeaconry, have scheduled a fundraising dinner for Sunday, November 23, 2024.

The Chief Administration Officer of Dokolo will be the chief fundraiser, and other stakeholders, business community, and local leaders are expected to provide their support.

Dokolo district’s youth leaders are determined and committed to promoting holistic development among youth.

They strongly believe that the conference will not only address the pressing issues faced by young people but also provide opportunities for skilling and support.

The speakers and facilitators will provide attendees with the tools and knowledge they need to break free from the bonds of societal evils and pave the way for a brighter and more prosperous future.

The Dokolo District Anglican Youth Leaders’ Non-denominational Youth Conference is an important initiative in light of the challenges that the district’s youth face.
