Total closure of Karuma Bridge announced

Karuma|The Minister of Works and Transport Gen Katumba Wamala has Tuesday announced the total closure of Karuma Bridge to all traffic starting.

The announcement takes effect on Monday September 23, 2024.

According to him as quoted by UNRA, the contractor will immediately start the demolition of the concrete deck to allow major works for its restoration.

This exercise is expected to last three months.

For more than three months, those travelling to northern Uganda have been using Murchison Falls route and Eastern Uganda. All these routes were designated by the government.

However, light vehicles carrying less than 30 passengers kept using the old route (via Karuma Bridge), something that will completely not happen from September 23.

Alternative routes:

  • Motorists from Kampala heading to Gulu/West Nile are advised to use Luwero—Kafu—Masindi—Paraa (Murchison Falls National Park) to connect to Pakwach or Gulu via Olwiyo and vice versa from motorists from Gulu/West Nile.
  • Motorists to Lira can use the Rwenkunye—Apac route via Masindi Port Ferry
  • Motorists to Lira can also use Iganga—Nakalama —Tirinyi—Pallisa—Kumi—Soroti—Lira and vice versa.
