Lira | Jasper Abura, the principal education officer of Lira City, died tragically on September 27, 2024, at approximately 1:02 a.m.
Abura, who passed away at the age of 53, was accompanied by the driver, Jacob Okello, and the town clerk, Komakech Emmanuel, of Lira City West Division.
Both were on their way from Kampala to Lira when the crash occurred in Adwila, on the Lira-Soroti highway.
According to the preliminary police report, Abura and Komakech were in a vehicle with the registration number LG 0001-123 driven by Okello, 39.
When the vehicle reached Adwila, it collided with an unidentified trailer heading from Lira City to Dokolo-Soroti. The driver lost control, veered off the road, and overturned about five metres from the highway.

SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Region police PRO, confirmed that Abura Jasper died on the spot.
The driver and Komakech were seriously injured and were immediately taken to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for treatment. Both remain in the hospital with serious injuries.
SP Okema also stated that the scene was investigated by the District Police Commander of Lira City Central Police Station and traffic officers.

In the morning, a reconstruction of the crash site was carried out to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Since the tragic crash, police say they are working to locate the trailer involved in Abura’s death, and they are in contact with other units on the highway to apprehend the driver.
The trailer driver is wanted to aid the investigation and possibly face legal action.
“This unfortunate incident has deeply impacted the community, and we extend our condolences to Lira City’s leadership, friends, and the grieving family,” Okema stated.
He stated that the police are dedicated to determining the cause of the crash and ensuring that justice is served.
This fatal death occurs five months after the death of Lira City town clerk Theophilus Tibihika in a road crash in Kole while allegedly driving himself to Kampala.
