MTN Uganda injects shs500 million to talent development

Kampala | MTN Uganda, through the MTN Foundation, has announced the second phase of the MTN Changemakers Initiative, a program dedicated to driving social change in Uganda. 

This new phase will see a shs 500 million investment to support 25 new projects across 20 districts. These districts are spread across Buganda, Bunyoro, Toro, Ankole, Kigezi, West Nile, Lango, Acholi, Karamoja, Teso, Elgon, North Bukedi, Busoga, and Kampala. This effort builds on the success of the first phase.

The MTN Changemakers Initiative, launched in July of the previous year, reflects MTN Uganda’s commitment to community empowerment and is consistent with its ambitious 2025 strategy. 

The program aims to identify and support individuals and groups that make significant contributions to their communities, resulting in a cascade of progress and development.

The first phase saw a shs 500 million investment in 25 projects across five regions, benefiting 165,000 people. Water and sanitation, education, health, and the environment were among the most significant areas of impact.

Notable projects from the first phase include:

Faces Up Uganda is a youth-based organisation in Masanafu, Rubaga Division, led by Emmanuel Kalule Ssekito that empowers young people by transforming their talents into livelihoods.

St. Joseph’s Aid Society, located in Kyankwanzi District. This organisation supports orphaned students with education, accommodation, and food. The initiative provided essential resources such as beds and new toilets.

Karamoja Youth Center. In collaboration with Tocau Karamoja and Nabilatuk district authorities, this project transformed a former detention facility into a youth centre offering digital literacy and education. The centre includes a computer lab and internet connectivity.

The second phase will emphasise economic empowerment, education, health, water, and environmental sustainability. This commitment is consistent with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).

MTN Uganda CEO Sylvia Mulinge says the company is committed to supporting government efforts and enhancing community development.

“Our goal is to empower communities to achieve their visions and foster collaboration for sustainable development,” she adds.

Lulama Lulu Marytheresa Xingwana, a trustee of the MTN Uganda Foundation and South Africa’s High Commissioner to Uganda, emphasised MTN Uganda’s mission to create a positive and lasting impact. 

“Our focus is on uplifting those in need and ensuring that no community is left behind. We are committed to championing the cause of the marginalised and creating opportunities for their growth and development.”

Over the past decade, MTN Foundation has invested over shs30 billion in more than 250 projects, significantly strengthening communities across Uganda. 

MTN Uganda, a leading telecom company, operates a national telecommunications network in all 134 districts of Uganda, with services provided by over 170,000 MoMo agents, 292,000 MoMo merchants, 200 service stores, and 13 major distributors.
