Lira City politics appear to be one to watch ahead of the general elections in 2026. One of the constituencies that will be closely watched is the Lira City Woman MP seat.
Betty Amongi, MP for Oyam South, has expressed interest in the Lira City Woman MP seat, which is currently held by the ruling party’s pro-Lango lady, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero.
MP Amongi, who was elected to serve the people of Oyam South until 2026, has literally abandoned her constituents to pursue political power in Lira City.
She has been moving around the City, attending events, mobilising people and promoting her bid for a political seat.
Further, Amongi is currently selling her ambitions through political proxies and agents, some of whom are affiliated with NRM and UPC, in order to win the hearts of the City’s population.
Lira City Woman MP Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero addressed the media on the fringes of the Lango health camp, which concluded on Friday, August 9.

She said, when asked, “All UPC candidates who want to come and stand with me in Lira City are free to come. What I’ve realised in this City, your work follows you, your good work follows you.”
Dr. Aceng added: “And what I have done in this City will surely follow me. All the other candidates are just wasting their time, they will come, they will come and I encourage them to come.
The Constitution, she said, “Allows them to stand wherever they want, they are free to come.”
“However, my advice to UPC is not for them to assume that what happened in the by-elections will continue to spread across Lango.”
Amongi has said a number of times that she’s going to Lira City to “play with her in-laws”.
Who are her in-laws? This question shall soon be answered.
