Oyam | Under the supervision of the Regional Criminal Investigation Directorate, police in North Kyoga Region investigated a suspected murder in Oyam.
The crime was recorded as CRB 378/2022 in response to allegations made on September 26, 2022 in Bar-munu village, Omac parish, Ngai sub-county, Oyam district.
On that day, Ojera Leo, Okello Richard Onyu, Adong Molly Okello, Alobo, Okello Jimmy, and others brutally murdered Ayoo Denis, Iden Sophia’s son, who was about 27 years old.
According to police, the above suspects were ordered to kill Ayoo by Awitong (clan leader) of Oromo Agwata-will, David Opio Apap.
Awitong Opio reportedly stated he did not want a thief (Ayoo) in his clan, according to SP Jimmy Okema, the PRO for the North Kyoga Region.
“As a clan head, my orders are final,” Awitong said, according to SP Okema.
The murder case was initially filed at Ngai Police Post and later transferred to Oyam district CPS under the aforementioned CRB.
It is also claimed that Ojera Leo, the accused clan leader under Opio Apap, sold Iden Sophia’s land and used the proceeds to persuade Ngai Police Post investigators not to pursue the case.
The case file was mysteriously stolen from Ngai Police Post, according to the regional police’s findings.
“On June 9, 2024, a concerned citizen and whistleblower wrote a complaint letter to the Regional CID Officer North Kyoga, copying the IGP, Director of CID, Human Rights Commission, and other relevant authorities, about the mismanagement of the case file,” PRO SP Okema stated.
To investigate the complaint, Okema told tndNews that the General Enquiry File (GEF) 07/2024 was immediately opened at North Kyoga Regional Police Headquarters in Erute.
“The witnesses were summoned, their statements were recorded, postmortem reports were obtained, the original case file from the Ngai Police Post was discovered, police officers involved were arrested, and alleged murder suspects were detained at Lira City CPS.
“The case file has been taken to the Oyam district CID for review and legal advice before being presented in court on the murder charge.”
Files were sent to RSA on July 11, 2024, pending his instructions.
A case of file mismanagement and concealment by police officers has also been reported, and the North Kyoga Police Standard Unit is investigating.
Files have already been sent to the Resident State Attorney, according to SP Okema, who also stated that the Police ask family members of the slain and detained suspects to calm down.
“Let us wait for his guidance before proceeding with the next steps.”
Even after being accused of ordering the murder of his clanson, Ayoo, Awitong Opio Apap remains free and out of police custody, at least for now.
