Agago I The Construction of pipe water systems has begun in the two sub-counties of Omiyo Pacwa and Lapono in Agago district.

The Ugandan government, through the Ministry of Water and Environment, is funding the water project for shs105,588,229 million.

The water project will benefit more than 60 villages across the two sub-counties.

According to James Opera, chairman LC3 of Omiyo pacwa sub-county, the water system is intended to serve the villages of Acholi nyek in Amyel parish, as well as Kijee village, which houses Kijee Primary School.

The pipes will also serve the residents of Lapima village, Odikomit-tegot, and Kakwa West village in Omiyo Pacwa sub-county.

Opera explained that piped water will replace non-functional boreholes and serve areas with low water levels.

According to a report by Agago district secretary of works and technical services Odong Richard Stanley, the team has already begun digging drainage channels, installing pipes and building the solar power station.

He added that there is a structure in place that will allow the district to take on management of the gazetted water system under their purview or that certain people may be awarded contracts.

As areas with very few water sources in the district currently, Odong explained why the two sub-counties were given priority.

The Ministry of Water and Environment estimates that by 2030, the pipe water system in rural areas will have grown from 11% to 50%.
