Amolatar | Attendants at Amolatar Health Centre IV have been losing rides to thieves who claim to be seeking medical care.
Attendants and local security were quick to notice the disguise. However, the wrongdoers’ actions had yet to be stopped, as confirmed by SP Patrick Jimmy Okema.
SP Okema, the North Kyoga Region’s Public Relations Officer, announced Saturday that territorial police in Amolatar district had rescued an unidentified suspect from a mob.
According to Okema, the suspect was rescued from Amolatar Health Centre IV around 9 p.m. on July 19.
He revealed that Omara Robert, a 19-year-old Namasale Technical School student, reported the incident to police.
The reporter is a resident of Baronger village, Anwalwake parish, Agwingiri sub-county, Amolatar district.
On July 19, an unknown male person allegedly entered the parking lot of Amolatar Health Centre IV.
“His intention was to steal a bicycle from one of the attendants who had come to check on his sick father. He was seen leaving the maternity ward, and an alarm was immediately raised, attracting many people in the facility,” Okema explained.
The suspect was arrested and beaten by the angry mob with sticks and stones, he said.
Police at Amolatar CPS were notified, and a team led by DPC responded to the scene to rescue the suspect.
Statements were taken from the complainant and relevant witnesses, and the suspect was transported to Amolatar CPS for further investigation.
Okema stated that a roadmaster bicycle was recovered, taken to the police station, and exhibited. However, due to his serious injuries, the suspect was later transported back to Amolatar Health Centre IV for medical attention.
According to preliminary police findings, thieves have stolen bicycles for attendants at the hospital on several occasions in the last few months, despite the fact that attendants and private security personnel at the facility were extremely vigilant.
“We want to thank the public for being vigilant while discouraging them from taking the law into their own hands, rather than appealing and encouraging them to arrest and hand them over to the police for investigation and possible prosecution in court.”
