Lira | Every year, most Ugandans take a day off from work to honour Martyrs who gave their lives to God by allowing themselves to be killed because of their strong faith in Him.
June 3 remains a significant day in the lives of Christians, with millions travelling long distances to Namugongo Martyrs shrines to commemorate the occasion.
Today, as celebrations begin, Lira City woman MP Dr Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero said Martyrs should be honoured not just with words, but also by living courageous and conviction-filled lives as Christians.
Dr. Aceng stated in a message issued by her political office that Martyrs’ Day is observed to honour the Martyrs’ unwavering faith and to commemorate their sacrifice.
“The Day is culturally and religiously significant, serving as a reminder of the Martyrs’ courage and the Ugandan Christian community’s resilience in the face of adversity.”
The Day she remembers also commemorates the execution of 23 Anglican and 22 Catholic converts to Christianity between 1885 and 1887 on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga II, King of Buganda.
“Their courage and steadfastness in the face of persecution have established them as an enduring symbol of faith and resilience.
“I want to thank the people of Lira City, especially the foot pilgrims and the rest of the Christians for making it up to Namugongo. Let us salute the Martyrs for the same sacrifices they made.
Dr. Aceng who doubles as the Minister of Health, concluded: “May the light of the Uganda Martyrs continue to shine, reminding us of the enduring power of faith.
This year Nebbi Catholic Diocese is leading the liturgy at the Catholic shrine under the theme: “But as for me and my household ,we shall serve the Lord” picked from the Book of Joshua, 24:25.
Similarly, the Anglican Church is also celebrating the Day under the theme: “Conforming to the truth of God’s world, not to the pattern of the world.”
The theme is picked from Romans 1:1-2.
