Kampala|Few young professionals have made as distinct an impact on the ever-changing world of law as Smith Kiiza, a Ugandan lawyer who is quickly rising to global prominence, breaking barriers and setting records.
Kiiza is currently pursuing his second Master’s degree in Business and Corporate Law at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) School of Law while also continuing his Ph.D. in Law, solidifying his position as one of the most accomplished young legal minds of his generation.
Kiiza’s legal career began in Uganda, but his influence and expertise have since expanded to three continents: Africa, Asia, and North America. Kiiza is not only a lawyer, but also a pioneer in international legal practice, having practiced in seven African countries, five Asian countries, and two Americas.
His areas of specialization include criminal law, corporate law, family law, and civil litigation. This extensive experience in various legal systems has given him a unique global perspective that few of his peers can match.
One of the most defining moments in Kiiza’s career was when he became the first African to obtain a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from India. Kiiza graduated from Shoolini University in Solan, Himachal Pradesh, with an impressive 8.5 CGPA, setting himself apart from his peers.
His academic excellence was matched by his groundbreaking admission to the Indian Bar Council, which made him the first African lawyer to do so. Kiiza received a government scholarship to help him navigate India’s legal education system, and he has continued to build on this foundation with his Ph.D. studies.
Kiiza, who is now based in California, is currently studying for the California Bar Exam, which is an important step toward his goal of practicing law in one of the world’s most advanced and competitive legal markets.
California’s complex legal framework and dynamic economy provide both challenges and opportunities for a lawyer of Kiiza’s caliber. Kiiza is positioning himself to practice law in the United States in order to expand his legal influence and ensure that his expertise has a global impact.

Aside from obtaining advanced degrees, Kiiza has made significant contributions to legal scholarship. He has written more than 20 books on topics such as law, business, spirituality, and relationships.
His writings are widely available on platforms such as Amazon, and his academic papers have appeared in international journals specializing in human rights and constitutional law. His work has been presented at conferences around the world, bolstering his reputation as a forward-thinking legal scholar.
His influence extends into legislative reform. In Uganda, he was instrumental in developing and guiding key pieces of legislation such as the Local Governments Act, the NSSF Act, the Parliamentary Elections Act, and the Presidential Election Act.
His work has had a significant impact on Uganda’s legal landscape, particularly in terms of governance and electoral law. Perhaps most notably, Kiiza independently drafted and presented the Tree Planting Bill to Uganda’s parliamentary legal committee, demonstrating his dedication to environmental law and sustainability.
Kizza has made significant contributions to his home country’s legal framework, demonstrating his vision of law as a tool for societal advancement.
In addition to his legal practice and legislative work, Kiiza has made time to teach the next generation of legal professionals. He has taught courses in Administrative Law, International Trade and Investments, and Intellectual Property Rights at Kampala International University and the Islamic University in Uganda on a part-time basis.
His enthusiasm for education is palpable, and he sees teaching as an opportunity to give back to the institutions that influenced his own legal career.
One of Kiiza’s most distinguishing characteristics is his ability to navigate multiple legal systems while maintaining a strong sense of purpose. His decision to register with legal societies on three continents, including the Uganda Law Society, the East African Law Society, and the Asian Law Society, demonstrates his desire to establish a truly global legal practice.
His long-term goals include becoming an international lawyer specializing in criminal and corporate law, as well as working for United Nations organizations. These ambitions are consistent with his belief that law should cross borders and promote justice on a global scale.
In addition to being a personal triumph, Kiiza’s accomplishments also represent how the legal education system is evolving. As the world becomes more interconnected, lawyers with a global perspective are in greater demand than ever.
Kiiza’s ability to seamlessly blend academic and practical legal experience distinguishes him as a legal trailblazer for the foreseeable future.
