Peace-loving members of the International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG) from Uganda, Kenya, and Cambodia gathered to celebrate and realise the world’s need for peace.

Soo-Jung Lee, Regional Director of the IWPG’s Global Region 12, recently hosted an online ceremony to commemorate the fifth anniversary of International Women’s Peace Day on April 26.

The event was held with the theme “Women, Make the Peace the World Needs!”

Over 50 women leaders and members attended the event, which was organised by the IWPG Global Region 12 branches in Uganda, Kenya, and Cambodia.

Beginning with a video introducing IWPG, IWPG President Hyunsook Yoon delivered a commemorative speech, followed by congratulatory remarks from Jennifer Aguti Ajiji.

Aguti is the Executive Director of Uganda’s National Association of Women’s Organisations.

Dianah Kamande Wanjiku, Founder and Executive Director of the Come Together Widows and Orphans Organisation, also spoke, reading the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW).

After watching a video of war’s tragedy and a performance of peace symbols, the participants signed a petition calling for the DPCW to be passed into law.

In her commemorative remarks, Ms. Yoon stated, “Nearly 60% of the people living in extreme hunger around the world are women and girls, and the percentage is even higher in conflict countries.”

“To create a world in which our beloved children can live safely, we must establish peace. We need to practise peace in our daily lives, realise the need for peaceful institutions, and join the international community in calling for the enactment of the DPCW.”

At the 68th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in March, IWPG and the Ugandan Ministry of Gender and Culture discussed a five-year development plan to share women’s roles as peacemakers,” said Soo-Jung Lee, Global Director.

“To make it a reality, we will communicate with NGO representatives from our partner countries of Uganda, Kenya, and California, USA.

“The impact of women moving together is extremely powerful.

“The IWPG Peace Committee will be an agent of change by establishing small peace communities around the world,” Lee added.

We hope that the Peace Committee, which was established today, will collaborate in researching and developing small initiatives to achieve the peace we seek, stated the Global Director.

Meanwhile, International Women’s Peace Day was established on April 26, 2019, as a call for women all over the world to band together to save precious lives from war and leave peace as a legacy for future generations.
