Lira | A fatal road crash occurred along the Lira-Soroti highway on Monday, May 20, around 12 p.m.
North Kyoga Regional Police PRO SP Patrick Jimmy Okema later announced that Lira City CPS had begun an investigation into the crash.
The incident occurred near Rima Primary School and involved a grey Toyota Hilux motor vehicle with the registration number UG 1234J.
The vehicle is attached to Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) Lira and motorcycle Reg. No. UDG 443E Bajaj boxer.
That car was allegedly travelling at a very high speed from the Soroti side to Lira City. When the driver arrived at Rima Primary School, he crashed into a motorbike carrying a rider and a passenger.
“The driver continued, lost control, and struck a pedestrian, seriously injuring him. The vehicle then overturned,” stated SP Okema.
Police officers led by the OC traffic Lira City CPS responded to the scene, picked up the victims, and transported them to Lira Regional Referral Hospital.
The rider, Otima Fednand, 25, and passenger, Ogwang Raymond, 66, were all confirmed dead upon arrival. They are from Aliri village, Akalo sub-county, Kole district.
According to Okema, their bodies were delivered to the mortuary for post-mortem.
Okullu Emmanuel, a pedestrian, and Agola Betty, a passenger in the vehicle, were all transported to a nearby clinic for treatment.
The motor vehicle and motorcycle were towed to Lira CPS for IOV inspection.
“The driver is in custody, and preliminary findings indicate that the cause of the accident was overspeeding,” SP Okema said.
