Div., speaker issues terms before the 2024/5 budget is approved

Speaker

Lira City West Division Council Speaker Daniel Okello is demanding accountability for how funds approved by councillors in the fiscal year 2023/2024 have so far been spent.

That is the condition he set before the council can approve the shs3.6 billion budget estimate for 2024/2025.

On Wednesday, April 17, he presided over a council meeting during which the draft budget was presented.

The speaker insisted that the Secretary of Finance present the accountability for the fiscal year 2023/2024 to the council before it approves the new budget on May 31, 2024.

He urged fellow councillors to do their best in scrutinising the budget, emphasising that if they fail to deliver on service delivery, it could hurt them politically in the 2026 general elections.

Lira City West Division’s next budget will prioritise education, health, and community welfare.

Amolo Rose Ongom, Deputy Mayor of Lira City West Division, stated during the presentation of the draft budget to Council that the next fiscal year’s priorities will be to address gaps in education, health, road infrastructure, and community wealth for residents throughout the division.

Ongom also confirmed that they will plan to upgrade Ober Health Centre, which the Ministry of Health recently accessed.
