Moroto | Maj Gen Francis Takirwa, Deputy Commander Land Forces of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), has urged soldiers to embrace training and discipline throughout their military careers.

Gen. Takirwa made the remarks on Tuesday while officiating at the passing out of 393 troops after they successfully completed a three-month refresher training intake 4 of 2024.

The training took place at 3 Infantry Division headquarters, Moroto army barracks, in Moroto district.

“You must embrace further training and keep discipline as crucial elements in military career progression. It’s so important that you master your employment,” said Gen Takirwa.

The General stated that through training and professional service, the institution is able to identify and develop potential soldiers to assume leadership roles.

He also emphasised that training is conducted at various levels, and that overcoming survival terrain and surroundings requires a soldier’s commitment and endurance.

The deputy CLF urged local leaders to re-energize their sensitization on the dangers of illegal firearm possession, creating positive mindset change, and demystifying economic activities to improve livelihood at house levels in the Karamoja sub-region.

Gen. Takirwa urged soldiers to practise financial discipline, noting that increasing member savings and shares in the UPDF’s Wazelendo SACCO will provide them with a great opportunity to increase their dividends with a visible profit margin.

Maj. Gen. Don William Nabasa, Commander of the 3rd Division, stated that the general security situation in Karamoja has greatly improved, giving the joint security forces a critical advantage in conducting regular training to customise troops into the required operational environment.

He thanked the UPDF strategic leadership for assisting the Division with training and infrastructure projects.

The Division Commander praised the sister security forces for participating in disarmament operations and achieving tremendous results.

Brig. Gen. Felix Busizoori, Deputy Division Commander, urged the troops to uphold the three pillars of soldiering: correct ideology, good conduct, and remaining pro-people’s army, in order to achieve the UPDF’s historical mission.

Lt. Col. Deus William Achungwire, the head of training, reported that the training objectives had been met, and that the soldiers would perform to the required standards, including blue-blue mitigation on the battlefield.

He explained that the increased capacity will allow soldiers to follow in the footsteps of those who came before them while also protecting the UPDF’s reputation built over time.

Three soldiers performed exceptionally well. These are: Private Okello Emmanuel (overall best), Private Mugala Shifa (best female), and Private Gimeyi Godfrey (best marksmanship exercise).
