18 people murdered in North Kyoga from Dec. 2023 to Jan. 18

Lira I North Kyoga Regional Police Headquarters say it has registered an overwhelming number of murder cases in less than two months.

The region is composed of 9 districts, 1 municipality and one city in Lango sub-region.

In a statement issued Thursday, January 18, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the region’s PRO, territorial Police in Otuke district are investigating the suspected murder of Apyewun Lazarus, 71.

His statement reveals that the crime happened “from around Ogwete market, Ogwete sub-county in Otuke district”. The case was reported to the Police by Amuge Margaret, 41, a daughter of the deceased.

It’s alleged that on January 17, 2024, at around 11 am, Apyewun Lazarus went to Ogwete market and met her biological daughter, Amuge Margaret Christine and she gave him “shs1, 200 for socializing”.

“The deceased then told his daughter to go and prepare food since he was coming back for lunch. The daughter went and prepared food but the deceased never came back home until January 18, 2024, in the morning at around 10 am when the daughter was informed that her father’s body was discovered lying in Ogwete market,” according to SP Okema’s statement.

Amuge later went to the scene and identified the body as her father and eventually reported the matter at Ogwete Police Post where a case of murder was registered at Otuke under CRB: 20/2024

“The crime scene was visited by a team of Police officers led by OC CID Otuke, Scene of Crime Officers, and Crime Intelligence and well documented. Statements of witnesses obtained from the scene.”

“The deceased body was conveyed to Orum Health Center IV pending postmortem. This is yet another very unfortunate incident of murder in the region bringing to a total of 18 different murder cases in North Kyoga since December 2023 to date.”

As crime cases surge, the region is appealing to members of the public to always find the best methods of solving disagreements to avoid losing lives. “As Police, we are very much committed to allowing the law to take its course against such errant individuals who break the law,” Okema said.

On January 6, Otwii Tom aka Morning was found dead. A popular boda boda rider in Lira City, Otwii, 22, was killed in Lela Tala Cell, Angwetangwet ward in Lira City West, according to SP Okema.
