MP Acon constructing shs9m toilets for Gotojwang traders

Otuke | Access to basic sanitation is still low in Uganada and the country is off track to meet the Sustainable Development Goal related to universal access to sanitation by 2030, according to Global Waters.

According to the Cities Alliance (CA), access to toilets and sanitation services is key to gender equality as women are disproportionally affected by a lack of basic sanitation.

The above challenges, CA say affect women’s personal hygiene, dignity and safety.

In Uganda’s rural district of Otuke, Otuke East County, the area MP, Acon Julius is promoting sanitation and hygiene by building toilets.

“For the cleanliness of the market, I have offered to build two toilets in Gotojwang market in Olilim Sub-county for men and women at Ugx9m.

“This will help in improving the health of the people who live around the market as human waste will have nowhere to go and the market will be clean,” said Acon.

Meanwhile, UNICEF says a lack of toilets is dangerous for everyone.

“…although it’s the poor who overwhelmingly do not have toilets, everyone suffers from the contaminating effects of open defecation, so everyone should have a sense of urgency about addressing this problem,” Sanjay Wijesekera, former head of global water, sanitation and hygiene at UNICEF.
