Over 1.2m candidates register for 2023 national examinations

Kampala, June 9, 2023: Over 1,200,000 candidates have registered for the 2023 national examinations by the end of normal registration period.

In a statement, Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) says by closure of the extended registration period at the midnight hour of June 7, 2023, a total of 1,204,134 candidates had registered for all the three examination levels: primary leaving examinations (PLE), Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE).

UNEB’s Principal Public Relations Officer, Jennifer Kalule Musamba said the figures are compared to 1,165,159 who had registered by the end of the initial period for normal registration on May 31, 2023.

Late registration commenced on June 8, 2023. This will go on until July 31, 2023, she said. Late entrants will pay a surcharge.

“Registration made until June 30 will attract a surcharge of 100 per cent for PLE, amounting to shs68, 000 and 50 per cent surcharge for both UCE and UACE candidates, totaling to shs246, 000 for UCE and shs 328,000 for UACE candidates.”

The last phase of late registration will be during the month of July and will attract a surcharge of 100 per cent for all the levels.

“Heads of centers are once again reminded that they can still make amendments to the uploaded data until July 31 without extra charges,” Kalule noted.

“Such adjustments should be communicated to UNEB for PLE, UCE and UACE corrections respectively.”

In 2022, at least 97,109 candidates failed PLE, UNEB’s Executive Director Daniel Odong said in January 2023. He revealed that a total of 811,810 sat for the examinations out of 83,254 who had registered.

Odong, while releasing the PLE examination results, said out of those who sat, 114, 617 got first grade, 357,799 got grade two and 146,583 were in third grade.

95,702 obtained fourth grade and 97,109 were not graded.
